The western club surged to a shocking 27-11 fourth quarter lead, and seemed poised to ring up a monumental upset. But Montreal's league MVP quarterback sparked a late comeback that closed the score to 27-25, and a last-gasp drive moved the ball at the Saskatchewan 31 with just seconds to play. Montreal's usually-reliable kicker MISSED the kick! BUT, Montreal got a second chance when Saskatchewan was called for having too many men on the field! The second kick sailed through the uprights, giving Montreal its first championship since 2002, sending Montreal fans into a frenzy and Saskatchewan fans into despair.

Seven of the eight Canadian pro teams had either clinched playoff berths or were in the running for one as the season entered its final weekend. Hamilton rebounded from a 3-15 season in 2008 to make the playoffs for the first time in five years with an inspiring season-ending win at Winnipeg. Had Winnipeg won, THEY would have made the playoffs. Saskatchewan and Calgary ended the season with a showdown game for the West title, won by Saskatchewan in front of their fans, 30-14. Calgary qualified as a division finalist, as did British Columbia and Edmonton.

There were an assortment of impressive individual efforts in Canada's pro league in 2009. Montreal's MVP quarterback completed 72% of his passes for over 4600 yards and was intercepted just six times in 550 pass attempts. Hamilton's star wide-out piled up over 2500 yards catching the ball and runnign back kicks. Edmonton's rookie running back won freshman honors with a sensational season that included 12 touchdowns and almost 1300 rushing yards. BC's athletic QB passed for 22 touchdowns and ran for 11 more! Calgary's offence featured a pair of 1000 yard receivers; Montreal had THREE of them!

On defence, the season was marked by several teams deploying multiple stars at the same position. Saskatchewan's bookend defensive ends terrorized enemy passers all season. Hamilton's resurgence was fueled by the play a pair of all-pro linebackers, who ruled the field. Winnipeg's season was almost saved by a corps of pick-six happy defensive backs.

The league's special teams star was the Montreal kicking specialist who was named all-league as both a place-kicker and a punter. And for good reason--he averaged 45 yards punting, 64 yards on kickoffs, connected on an eye-popping 55 of 63 field goal attempts, and scored almost 250 points with his kicking leg!
