Run Your OWN Pro Football League! The 2010 FOOTBALL AMERICA Card Set for SECOND SEASON Pro Football Game is NOW AVAILABLE!

It's the return of Football America, SECOND SEASON Pro Football board game's classic fictional professional football league!

Football America was born in 2000 with the debut of PLAAY.com, as an "alternate universe" of professional football. The premise behind Football America is that it's sometimes fun for sports board gamers to play out a "what if" scenario, where there are no preconceptions of how the players and teams are supposed to perform. Essentially, you're creating your OWN pro football history! You set up your league into divisions or conferences, create a schedule, and see what happens!

The original Football America release in 2000 was a thirteen-team league, issued on team sheets. We distributed the players evenly among the teams, resulting in a very balanced and competitive league in which any team had the potential to earn a playoff spot. The league was created to be a pass-oriented league, with the offensive skill players relatively stronger as a group than the pass defenders. Thus, anyone who conducted a Football America 2000 sports board game project enjoyed their share of 49-42 barn-burners, and a season in which most of the league's teams hovered around the .500 mark.

In each of the years 2001 through 2003, we issued individual card updates for the league. Each update contained a base roster of 32 player cards for each of the 13 teams, plus additional cards for rookies and free agents.

For 2010, Football America returns as a 12-team league, with most of the franchises intact from the league's foundation. The un-named team has been disbanded, and the Birmingham franchise has been relocated to Oklahoma City. The rest of the league cities are unchanged from 2003. The league has become more balanced, offensively, and defenses have improved. While still a balanced league, there's been a move away from "pure parity," and some teams have established themselves as playoff favorites for the 2010 season. Here's a quick run-down of each of the teams contained in the 2010 Football America set...

CHICAGO: Features a league rarity "vertical passing game," with veteran QB Mike Trocano connecting with a deep corp of receivers, headed by WR Terrance Robinson. All-league C Everett Teltschick anchors a line that will give Trocano plenty of time. RB Sedrick Spinner keeps defenses honest with effective rushing. The defense--always a Chicago strength in FA seasons past--remains strong, with SS Ryan Patterson nailing down a stiff secondary, and rising-star A.J. Hicks calling signals at MLB.

DETROIT: Long-suffering Detroit football fans should find something to cheer about with their Football America franchise--clearly established as one of the league's best clubs for 2010. The offense boasts plenty of star power, with QB Greg Carter, FB Terrell Page, OT Wally Kleine, TE Lavell Hooks and WR Eric Yarber ALL among the league's best. The defense may have trouble stopping the top running clubs, but a solid secondary bookended by CBs Floyd Robinson and Clovis Miller will be mostly air-tight. DE Darrell Holmes will provide plenty of heat on enemy passers.

GOLDEN BAY: Formerly known as Bay Area, this west coast franchise returns in 2010 with a solid roster of workmanlike players. The strength is in the defense, with star NT Jamaal Jackson ruling the middle of the line. LB Torrance Rush and DE Maurice Bennett provide effective pressure on opposing QBs, and CB Tyrone Darden captains a creditable secondary. Veteran Mike Kelley remains the QB in Golden Bay, a solid game-manager who makes few mistakes. His supporting cast, though, is not particularly fearsome. RB Mel Carver is durable, but he won't have gaping holes to run through. G Todd Lee is a standout lineman, but the rest of the line is non-descript.

LOS ANGELES: A strong running team when they're able to control the line, RB Alonzo Curtis will have plenty of space created for him by run-blocking linemen like T Matt Washington and G Irv Banks. QB Matt Harrell has some inviting targets to throw to, especially TE Ryan Barnett, but he'll need to establish the run first. Legendary FA kicker Rich Schwake is still deadly from inside 50 yards, giving LA a huge advantage. CB Dontari Harper and DT Rodell Payton help nail down a defense that specializes in not giving up big plays.

MEMPHIS: Veteran QB Robin Yates is back again to pilot an all-out passing attack that's a throwback to the original FA. WR's Titus Moy and Anthony Peace, as well as TE Chase Giannato and RB Hollis Munro should each be among the FA leaders in receptions at the end of your season. OT Troy Fontenalu will help keep Yates from spending too much time on his backside. There are a few good players on defense, like pass-rushing LB Joel Rowe and run-stuffing DE Deron Leonard, but Memphis' best defense will be their keep-away offense.

NEW JERSEY: An anemic offense will make it tough for this New Jersey club to make your playoffs. You'll have to choose between Stu Barton or Wally Williamson at QB--Barton's a better passer, but Williamson is more mobile. Or, you could go with undisciplined rookie Jon Konopka, who likes to sling it deep. There's no clear front-runner at RB, either. T Brock Kelley and G Garrick Lundy are top-echelon linemen, but there's a big drop-off after that. The story's better on defense, with long-time CB Tremaine Mack and DT Kyle McCarty established as two of the league's best. Other defenders will make an impact as well, including SS Keyshawn Dennis, LB Robin Sinclair.

NEW YORK: Veteran QB Gary Zamberlin remains at the controls in the Big Apple, and his leadership--and a strong supporting cast--make New York one of the FA's 2010 front-runners to make the playoffs. He'll find friendly targets in TE Roger Heller and WR Reggie Walker, and he's got two of the league's best linemen to protect him, T Paul St. James and G Keith Kirschke. Defensively, New York has play-makers like MLB "Mojo" Jones, CB Orlando Harris and DE Marco Rodriguez. PK Danny Dixon is another weapon.

OKLAHOMA CITY: The former Birmingham franchise relocates west, and features enough talent and depth to make a probable playoff run. Spearheading the attack is tough, durable, hard-charging RB Ronde Lincoln. Just give him the ball, and watch him knock people over--he's a one-man wrecking crew! On defense, this is a team that won't get burned often. With run-stoppers like DT Zack Barnes and Ruka Soa'ta and LB Darius Wilkinson, OKC won't give up a lot of yards on the ground. The secondary is anchored by CB Kamaal Dalton, and the rest of the crew is rugged and smart. The placekicking, though, is suspect.

ORLANDO: With an unremarkable defense and a toothless offense, Orlando will have difficulty staying competitive. Their offensive line is strong, led by star OT Rolando Parker, and C Adam Marsh and T Trent Patton will have their moments too, but the skill positions are manned by mostly journeymen players. WR Mar Tay Williams is maybe the best of the bunch, but even he has a tendency to perform erratically.

PHILADELPHIA: QB Max McGuire is a capable, dependable signal-caller, and he's got support from durable RB Antwan O'Neal, gargantuan OT Tom Wisniewski, and speedy WR Kaseem Casey--all established FA stars. But there's a steep drop in talent on offense after those guys, so they'll need to stay healthy for Philly to stay in the playoff chase. They've got one of the best defensive secondaries in the entire league--CBs Yasser Brooks and Vincent Brown, and safeties Anthony Sanders and Marcus Heaps are all talented pass defenders. DT Derrick Nix is a mountain in the middle of the line. And PK Ross O'Hallohan is still in a Philly uniform, providing reliable kicking whenever a drive stalls.

PORTLAND: With RB Anthony Moreland lugging the ball and catching passes out of the backfield, Portland can move the chains. And WR Paris McCullough is a reliable pass-catcher. But QB Mike Del Mar has proven himself over the history of the FA to be adequate at best, and your other options at signal-caller have questions marks as well. The defense is manned by capable, though unspectacular players. MLB Mike George will make some plays, and DE Cash Clark will get through to the QB enough times to cause problems for opposing offenses.

SAN ANTONIO: A tough-running club that's also tough against the run--but, one-dimensional on both offense and defense. QB Cary Sutherland's best option is just handing the ball off to RB Imani Macklin--anything else is a calculated risk. C Bruce Diehl and T Ryan Moran will clear some holes for Macklin. CB Eric Philyaw, MLB Luverne Matthews and DE Ashley Gregory hold down a defense that will give up its share of big pass plays. The good news is, San Antonio will get some of those scores back, with dangerous KR-PR Trumaine Washington a constant threat to go the distance with a kickoff or punt.
