Highlights of the 1981-82 Pro Hockey Season
The 1981-82 Pro Season saw a number of highly-regarded teams unceremoniously ousted from the playoffs, including three of the four regular-season divisional champions, Montreal, Edmonton and Minnesota. The fourth champion, New York, was pushed to the limit by fourth-place Pittsburgh, but survived and advanced. From there, the Isles never looked back, ultimately sweeping Vancouver in the title series.
But it was Wayne Gretzky that hockey fans buzzed about. Gretzky broke several records including scoring 50 goals in just 39 games, breaking a record held by Maurice Richard and Mike Bossy of 50 in 50. Gretzky also set a new record for goals (92) assists (120) and points (212). It was one of the best individual seasons in pro hockey history.
But “The Great One” wasn’t the only one lighting the lamp: nine other players scored 50 or more goals in ‘81-82. New York's Mike Bossy set a record for right wingers by scoring 147 points and finished second in scoring. Peter Stastny of Quebec finished third with 139 points followed by Washington's Dennis Maruk, New York's Bryan Trottier, Chicago's Denis Savard, and Los Angeles' Marcel Dionne. New York's Billy Smith was the league’s top goalie, Winnipeg's Dale Hawerchuk won rookie honors and Chicago' Doug Wilson earned the trophy for top defenseman.
