We’re excited to bring you another season of tabletop baseball with History Maker Baseball! Presenting the 1981 Pro Season, in our “classic” format with expanded rosters, perfect for extended projects. The ‘81 season is well-remembered for its “split season” format made necessary because of a players’ strike, which lasted nearly six weeks midway through the schedule. Only about two thirds of the season was played, roughly fifty games on either side of the six-week labor dispute. Thus, these cards give you one of the greatest “what-if” opportunities in all of baseball history!
In real-life, the four half-season winners were qualified for the playoffs, with a quartet of exciting post-season best-of-five series, three of which went the full five games. In the end, it was an iconic New York vs. Los Angeles showdown in the annual Fall Classic, with LA taking the series in six games. But--maybe it'll turn out differently on your tabletop!
Every player with 50 or more at bats or 10 innings pitched has been carded for this set, over 700 players in all, each player rated based on his actual 1981 contribution. These players, from superstar starter to seldom-used bench-warmer, are ready to re-create the summer’s baseball adventures on your tabletop--labor disruption, optional! (In other words, the players will happily play ALL 162 games if you want!)
**You’ll note that some pitcher cards include variants of the STRONG endurance quality. This optional quality is explained on pages xvii and xviii in the 5.0 rules booklet and will add extra depth to the pitching facet of the game. If you prefer simplicity, you can ignore these qualities (they won’t occur in the game book).
