The 1993-94 season New York’s “Original Six” squad won its first Cup in over fifty years (1940). The playoff run was highlighted by team captain Mark Messier guaranteeing a series win vs. New Jersey, after the club went down 3-2 in the best of seven series. Led by playoff MVP Brian Leetch, New York defeated Vancouver in seven games. New York were the Cup favorites as they led the league in points with 112. The West was a different story. Detroit led the conference with 100 points but were upset by eighth seed San Jose in the first round.
1993-94 saw the pro league expand by two teams, bringing more hockey to the warm-weather regions of Southern California and Florida. The Minnesota team was relocated to Dallas, despite solid fan support (but an aging arena in Bloomington, MN). Wayne Gretzky led the league in scoring with 130 points followed by League MVP Detroit’s Sergei Fedorov with 120. Boston’s Adam Oates was third with 112. Buffalo’s Dominek Hasek was the top netminder making one acrobatic save after another. Hasek led the league in Save Percentage with .930 and a GAA of 1.95. Top Defenseman honours went to Ray Bourque and the Russian Rocket Pavel Bure was a first team all star for Vancouver, collecting a league-best 60 goals. Scott Stevens of New Jersey and St.Louis’ Brendan Shanahan rounded out the other first team all-stars that year and New Jersey’s Martin Brodeur won rookie of the year honors.
The cards are presented in a concise “end of season” format. This means (with a few exceptions) players are carded only with the team they last played-for, and only players with a minimum of 20 games played are included in the main set. We think this best reflects the way the majority of tabletop gamers enjoy a current season card set, focusing on hockey’s “playoff push” with a streamlined presentation that showcases the major players.
This set was originally released in digital format only as part of the 2024 Holiday Sale. It was a collaborative effort with PLAAY gamer Rob Gallamore, who is not only a passionate hockey and sports board game fan, but also a hockey scout with many years of experience. We worked with Rob to create the parameters for the set, and then produced the card set in team colors from Rob’s ratings.
