For the fourth time in five seasons, Man City ended up at the top of the table, although it was a closer run this year than last. In fact, the title went down to the final match of the season, with Man City hanging on to a one point advantage in the standings. When the club fell behind 2-0 to Aston Villa, it appeared the door was wide open for Liverpool to steal the crown. But City stormed back with three goals in the final 30 minutes to re-take the lead and ultimately earned the league championship with the 3-2 win.

At the other end of the table, Norwich City’s time in the top tier league ended with four games remaining in the season, and Watford was quick to follow. The final relegation position was a spirited battle between Burnley, Leeds and Everton, each of whom found itself in the league’s bottom three at one point or another during the season. Everton’s season-ending 3-2 win over Crystal Palace preserved the club’s run of 69 years in the top tier--it hadn’t been relegated since 1951. Burnley had the advantage over Leeds in goal differential, but its loss to Newcastle combined with a late Leeds win over Brentford sent Burnley back to the second tier for the first time in six seasons.
