It’s the "Movie President" expansion for “We Have A Problem, Mr. President…” A collection of three movie-inspired national emergencies which have been adapted for our thematic resource-management game. Each scenario includes an incentive disc for achieving “National Acclaim,” same as the base game and our historical expansion. Here are the three scenarios included in this fun new expansion…
Lookalike President
Based on the 1993 movie "Dave" starring Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver. Dave Kovic, a friendly temp-agency owner who just happens to look exactly like corrupt President Bill Mitchell, is hired by the Secret Service to impersonate the president after Mitchell suffers a massive stroke. Dave warms to the role and, in fact, more or less instantly rehabilitates Mitchell's negative PR standing with a series of bold, positive, benevolent and popular political moves.
In the movie, the president's chief of staff (Bob Alexander) is the bad guy. In fact, the whole lookalike ruse is designed by Alexander to keep himself in power and continue the corruption. We could have used that as the game's win condition, but of course that's not how the movie ends. So we've re-directed the corruption to Mitchell's allies and have aligned you (as chief of staff) with fellow good guy Vice President Gary Nance.
This scenario is a two-star crisis and is designed to be easy to win (i.e., achieve National Acclaim). My thinking is that Dave is a good guy and, understanding the difficulty of what you're (jointly)trying to pull off, is going to cut you some slack. Indeed, many of the crisis cards will earn you an increase in approval even if you don't succeed in dismissing them. Unless you bungle the task completely, you'll find it difficult to be fired and you'll have a great chance of getting that book deal!
Outer Space Invasion
Inspired by the 1996 movie "Independence Day" starring Bill Pullman as President Thomas Whitmore. Whitmore is tasked with coordinating domestic and world-wide responses to a sinister and destructive invasion from outer space. Your job as the president's chief of staff will be to help/direct that effort. It won't be easy.
Paramount in importance is finding a safe house from which the president can operate that's not vulnerable to the excoriating outer space attacks. When that crisis card comes into play, if you don't dismiss it the game is over. There are other difficult tasks, but none more important than that one.
This is a five-star crisis deck. You have five "critical" crisis cards which cannot be discarded with political capital. There's a total dice expenditure of 32 dice--most for any deck we've created. Assuming a minimum of two dice allocated for for presidential approval each turn, you'll be unlikely to resolve this crisis in less than 10 days. Adding to the difficulty from a game standpoint is the relative few "2"s required. Thus, whenever you roll a "2" you will have fewer options to spend it effectively. If you roll more than two "2"s on a turn--that's bad.
Smartest Guy in the World
Loosely themed upon the 2006 movie "Idiocracy" written by Mike Judge ("Beavis and Butt-Head," "King of the Hill")and starring Terry Cruz and Luke Wilson, a movie which saw limited release because of the offensive portrayal of corporate sponsors. It's a parody on a society that is ever "dumbing down." Wilson's character Joe Bauers is placed into an experimental one-year hibernation protocol which unexpectedly stretches to 500 years. He awakes to a culture whose collective IQ has sunk to absurdly low levels due to the recession of the gene pool. Of average intelligence when he went into deep sleep, he's now the smartest person in the world. As such, former professional wrestler and current President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho (played by Terry Cruz) conscripts Bauers to solve ALL of America's problems--unemployment, food shortages, tanked economy and more--in ONE week!
In the movie, Bauers is appointed Secretary of the Interior and eventually is promoted to Vice President. For our game purposes, he (and, vicariously, you) take the role of chief of staff and "right hand man." The goal is the same: fix the nations problems in one week (or two, if you're lucky), avoid getting fired and--hopefully--achieve National Acclaim!
