It's back to the '90s for SECOND SEASON Pro Football Game, with the 1990 Pro Season!

The ’90 season perhaps hasn’t often been thought of as a “classic” season, but now that over a quarter century has passed, it’s time to consider it as such…

The American Conference was a true scramble. In the East, Buffalo and Miami each fielding pass-happy offenses, led by future hall-of-fame quarterbacks, making for an epic season-long battle, while today’s east dynasty, New England, was a non-factor, finishing a dismal 1-15. Meanwhile, the Central and Western divisions were both locked into three-way struggles which weren’t resolved until the final week of the season. Houston secured one of the playoff spots at 9-7, sporting it’s period-piece “run-and-shoot” offense, Cincinnati earned another, while fellow 9-7 clubs Pittsburgh and Seattle were left outside looking in.

The National Conference saw two clubs separating themselves from the pack: New York, led by its fearsome defense, and a legendary San Francisco club that featured a line-up of future hall-of-famers—it finished 14-2. On the other end of the spectrum was New Orleans, which hovered below .500 the entire season, only to sneak into the playoffs on the season’s final night—New Year’s Eve, no less—earning a playoff spot at 8-8 when Dallas, seemingly playoff-bound, lost its emerging star QB in week fourteen and dropped its last two games to finish 7-9.

The playoffs produced plenty of exciting moments. Buffalo won a shoot-out with divisional rival Miami, 44-34, and then bludgeoned Los Angeles in one of the most playoff championship thumpings of all time, 51-3. New York won its conference title with defense—it had to, as New York’s starting QB was knocked out of action late in the season, injured. With the back-up QB directing a modest offense, the New York defense took things into its own hands. First came a 31-13 smothering of Chicago. Then, with the conference title at stake, New York traveled to San Francisco and posted an eye-opening upset, failing to reach the end zone but converting five field goals for a 15-13 win. That set up an all-Empire State championship match-up—Buffalo and New York—featuring supercharged offense vs. suffocating defense. The result was a heart-stopping ending that sports fans still talk about: Buffalo’s kicker missed what would have been the game-winning field goal as time ran out, and New York escaped with yet another an upset win.
